January 28 Christmas Comes To Hueijhong CampusChristmas 2007 was an exciting time on Cornel’s Hueijhong Campus. The playground was decorated with a huge tree that brought everyone’s attention to this splendid holiday. The classrooms, hallways, and library were festively decorated with trees, lights, and an assortment of Christmas decorations. The students participated in many holiday activities. Gift exchanges, decorating cookies, and crafts were all part of the fun and learning experience. The kindergarten students came together to sing Christmas songs and watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This is a fascinating Christmas story that children of all ages love to watch at each Christmas. The teachers enjoyed the movie as much as the students. In addition to all the fun and learning the students did during Christmas, the teachers had their own fun too. On the Thursday before Christmas, Angel, Lucy and Josh treated all the foreign and Chinese staff to a homemade breakfast. On the menu were pancakes, bacon, and coffee. It was a great time for the administration team at Hueijhong to thank our hardworking, dedicated staff. After the breakfast, the teachers settled down for their annual gift exchange. The teachers all drew names and bought presents for someone secretively. At the same time, Principal
Bih-Hua presented each teacher with a wonderful box of chocolates for Christmas. It truly was a magnificent holiday! Christmas at CornelOn December 22nd, Cornel school held its annual kindergarten Christmas party at the Plaza hotel. This year the format was changed a little as there was no formal lunch, but instead snacks and beverages on a buffet. This change allowed us to prepare more games and activities for the children. Santa Claus made a special entrance this year and dazzled us all with his magic as he created 2 more Santas to help him and then, all Santa with their elves, treated us to a crazy dance! It was a great way to get things started! We were also lucky this year to have Teacher Lisa of the Beavers and Lynx classes to organize the music. Having live music to back up the children’s voices and for the sing-a-longs brought a special touch to the event. Thanks to all staff for their help and to the parents and kids for showing up and having a great time! December 31 Cornel Rainbow Time Wins Again! We are very pleased to announce that the Rainbow Time program has won the National Education Radio’s contest for the third time! This year the competition was quite fierce, but Rainbow Time still came in first, beating another school which has a chain across the island. Thanks goes to our wonderful Rainbow Time team and to the support of our audience! Thanksgiving FeastDuring the American Thanksgiving holiday, the students and staff at Cornel gathered together to learn about and reflect on Thanksgiving and what it means. The students were extremely excited, from Junior Kindergarten all the way to Sixth Grade. The kindergarten students and teachers enjoyed a full Thanksgiving meal with all the trimmings. Teachers Vanessa and Stephanie made mashed potatoes while Teacher Kim labored on cranberry sauce. Teacher Josh baked and shared his mother’s family recipe of sage dressing. The children shared their thankful feelings and expressed thanks for their families and teachers among other things. The Yves program at Hueijhong graciously accepted a turkey dinner donation from one of our supportive parents. The teachers and administration were especially thankful to this anonymous donor. Thank you!
Thanksgiving Feast A Success! On November 24th, the entire staff of Cornel along with their families and friends enjoyed a potluck Thanksgiving supper. This event has been a longstanding tradition at Cornel and is one that always creates warm memories. One of the great things about this event is everyone brings a dish and it is a great opportunity to try different kinds of food! Principal Bih Hua brought two turkeys and pumpkin pie which were prepared by herself so that the teachers got to have a taste of home.
